Ebonyi Group Threatens Recall of Senator Nwebonyi Over Role in Natasha-Akpabio Feud

The Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora (AEISCID), a prominent socio-political pressure group, has issued a stern warning to Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi of Ebonyi North Senatorial District, accusing him of bringing shame to the people of Ebonyi due to his actions in the ongoing conflict between the suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, AEISCID, through its President, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, condemned Senator Nwebonyi’s vocal support for Senate President Akpabio amid allegations of sexual harassment raised by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. The group criticized the senator for publicly attacking prominent Nigerians and defending Akpabio during the controversy.

“His utterances, conduct, and actions are completely un-parliamentary, unprofessional, and unbecoming of a legislator by every standard,” Oluchukwu stated in the release.

AEISCID pointed out that while many Nigerians have expressed concern over both the allegations and the controversial suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senator Nwebonyi has chosen to attack critics, including former Minister of Education Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, a renowned advocate for women’s rights.

“We have watched, read, and listened deeply with concern the reckless words of one of our own… who verbally attacks anyone and everyone calling for accountability,” the statement read.

The group further accused Nwebonyi of misunderstanding his duties as a lawmaker. “He was elected to make laws that benefit his constituents and bring dividends of democracy, not to serve as an ‘attack dog’ in defense of a colleague,” AEISCID argued.

The group also accused the senator of neglecting his legislative duties and instead acting as a political errand boy for the Senate leadership, calling his media engagements “disgraceful.”

“What must have been promised or offered to the lawmaker to reduce himself and, by extension, ridicule the rest of Ebonyians?” AEISCID queried.

Speculation surrounding Nwebonyi’s potential bid for the Ebonyi State governorship seat in 2027 was also addressed. AEISCID warned that his recent behavior should disqualify him from such aspirations.

“Ebonyi cannot continually be governed by the worst among us even in the guise of equity,” Oluchukwu cautioned.

In a final message, AEISCID urged the people of Ebonyi North to begin considering the possibility of recalling Senator Nwebonyi if he continues his “disgraceful expedition” in defense of the Senate President.

“Enough should be enough already,” the statement concluded.
