Presidency Backtracks, Acknowledges Errors in Tinubu’s Appointment Figures
The Presidency has withdrawn a previously released breakdown of federal appointments made by President Bola Tinubu, admitting that the figures contained in the list were inaccurate.
The correction came after Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account that Tinubu had appointed 71 Northerners and 63 Southerners to key positions. However, Dare later acknowledged discrepancies in the numbers.
“We have noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted. We are sorry. We will provide an updated list later. Thank you,” he posted.
The initial list was intended to defend President Tinubu’s approach to national inclusion and adherence to the federal character principle in his appointments.
In his original message, Dare described Tinubu as a “detribalised” leader who values competence above ethnicity or religion, citing his governance record in Lagos State and his current role as Nigeria’s president.
“People tend to isolate new appointments and examine them through a tribal lens,” Dare noted. “But it’s too early to conclude that the appointments are lopsided.”
The regional breakdown had indicated that the South-West received 26 appointments, South-South 21, and South-East 16.
