Breaking: Court Sentences Osinachi’s Husband, Peter Nwachukwu, to Death by Hanging
In a landmark ruling, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the verdict after finding Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, which led to the tragic death of his wife on April 8, 2022. The prosecution had successfully proven its case against him, securing the conviction.
Nwachukwu, who was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on behalf of the Federal Government, faced multiple charges, including culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal abuse, among others.
The trial saw the prosecution call 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, who testified as the fourth and fifth witnesses in the case. In addition, 25 documents were presented as evidence during the proceedings.
Nwachukwu testified in his own defense and presented four additional witnesses, along with four exhibits to support his case.
Before the court handed down the sentence, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, appealed for leniency. In response, the prosecution counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to impose the maximum penalty allowed by law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme convicted Nwachukwu on Count 1 for culpable homicide, sentencing him to death by hanging. He was also given a two-year prison sentence for each of Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18. For Count 10, he received a six-month term, while Count 11 resulted in a three-year sentence.
Additionally, Nwachukwu was fined ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 for Counts 6 and 7, respectively.
