EFCC Arraigns Man For Alleged N1.6m Fraud In Borno

 

The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 arraigned one Alhaji Abba Umar before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri over alleged fraud.

The defendant was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of N1, 600,000.00 (One Million and Six Hundred Thousand Naira).

Alhaji Umar, in the charge was alleged to have sometimes in March, 2022 in Maiduguri, dishonestly induced one Modu Goni Sheriff to give him his title document of a plot of land measuring 450 square meters with right of occupancy no. BO/46605/4 dated 19/03/2002.

EFCC in the charge said the land belonging to Umar and located at No. BOTP/178 Abbaganaram Housing Estate was sold by Umar to another person at the rate of N1,600,00.00 without paying Sheriff, the owner.

The anti-graft agency described the act as an offence contrary to Section 320 (a) and punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State.

The defendant pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge when it was read to him. Thereafter, the prosecution counsel, S.O. Saka prayed for a trial date and the remand of the defendant in a Correctional Centre.

Justice Kumaliya thereafter adjourned the case till June 4, 2025 and remanded the defendant in a Maiduguri Correctional Centre.

Umar’s journey to the correctional facility started when the title document for the plot of land located at Abbaganaram Housing Estate was entrusted to him and he sold the same plot of land to another without the consent of the owner.
