NANS Writes JAMB To Supervise UMTE Retake
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has indicated its intention to supervise the repeat conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for candidates affected by technical glitches.
NANS, in a letter signed by its National President, Olushola Oladoja to the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede and made available to journalists on Friday in Abuja, commended JAMB for its transparency in addressing the issues that marred the 2025 UTME.
LEADERSHIP recalls that of the 1.9 million candidates who participated in the 2025 UTME, over 1.5 million reportedly scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks.
Amid widespread public criticism over the poor performance, Oloyede convened top IT experts and educational assessment professionals to investigate the technical glitches that allegedly impacted the examination.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the JAMB Registrar acknowledged a technical error that compromised the integrity of results in 157 centres nationwide, affecting the scores of 379,997 candidates.
He assured that affected students in the five south-eastern states and Lagos could retake the examination.
The student body, in the letter, emphasised that the request to participate in the retake examination monitoring was in line with its core mandate to safeguard the interests of Nigerian students and uphold transparency in educational processes.
“We write to commend the Board for its swift and transparent decision to conduct a retake of the 2025 UTME for candidates affected by technical and administrative challenges across six states.
“This action reflects your commitment to justice, fairness, and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s educational system.
“In line with our core mandate, we express our interest in supervising and monitoring the conduct of the UTME retake examination across all affected centres,” Oladoja stated.
The NANS president nominated representatives from each of the six affected states to act as official supervisors during the exercise.
He described the nominees as “responsible student leaders with proven records of discipline and diligence,” expressing confidence in their ability to support the process professionally.
The nominated supervisors include Dr. Mike Ifenke and Frank Eme-Orji for Abia State, Ikechukwu Santos and Ebube Ijeoma for Anambra State, Ibeabuchi Onya and Olisa Nwuruku for Ebonyi State, Chidi Nzekwe and Minister Udochukwu for Enugu State, Chinaemerem Emesowum and Chidiebere Aguocha for Imo State, and Afeez Akinteye and Busari Adelaja for Lagos State.
