Tinubu Celebrates Nigerian-born New Mayors in London

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, two Nigerian-born British citizens, on their historic election and inauguration as mayors in London.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the President, through his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, commended Bright and Jackson for continuing the legacy of excellence established by Nigerians in the diaspora. He highlighted their dedication to values such as honesty, integrity, hard work, and their commitment to the well-being of others. Tinubu expressed confidence that their inspiring achievements would motivate young people both in Nigeria and around the world to pursue excellence and serve their communities with distinction.

Opeyemi Bright was sworn in as the Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, making history as the borough’s youngest-ever mayor at just 29 years old. This milestone follows seven years of remarkable service to her community. Bright had already made history in 2018 when she became the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at 22.

Jason Jackson was elected the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough’s establishment in 1900. Jackson’s rise in local government has been swift, having been first elected as a councillor in 2022 and subsequently appointed Chair of the Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.

In his congratulatory message, Tinubu expressed pride in their achievements, saying: “On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I urge you to continue giving your best in your new roles as the first citizens of Barking and Dagenham, and Islington. I have every confidence in your abilities and look forward to the positive impact you will make in your respective boroughs.”

The President’s message underscores the growing influence and success of Nigerians in the diaspora and their continued contributions to their communities.
