PICTORIAL: West African Electoral Leaders Visit INEC, Pledge Commitment to Stronger Democracy

 

A high-level delegation from the Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) of Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Liberia visited Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen regional cooperation and foster credible elections throughout West Africa.

The Commission shared the update on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday morning.

The visiting delegation included Mr. Birame Sene (Senegal), Ms. Felisberta Moura Vaz (Guinea Bissau), Ms. Zainab Umu Moseray (Sierra Leone), and Mr. Isaac Samuel Zahn (Liberia). They were welcomed by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and other senior officials of the Commission.

During their meeting, the electoral leaders discussed key electoral reforms and exchanged best practices aimed at enhancing democratic governance in West Africa. They also commended INEC for its role in bolstering electoral credibility and for offering technical support to other African electoral bodies.

On behalf of the delegation, Mr. Birame Sene expressed admiration for INEC’s efforts in strengthening democracy, saying, “INEC has set a remarkable example in the region by advancing electoral reforms and supporting fellow African electoral institutions.”

In response, Prof. Yakubu extended a warm welcome to the delegation and reiterated INEC’s dedication to regional collaboration. He emphasized the significance of knowledge-sharing and the importance of building resilient electoral systems throughout West Africa.

“Democracy thrives when electoral bodies collaborate to ensure transparency and credibility. INEC is committed to assisting our partners in ensuring free and fair elections across the region,” Yakubu affirmed.
