Saraki Calls for Transparent Investigation into Natasha-Akpabio Dispute to Protect Senate’s Integrity

A former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has urged for an open investigation into the sexual harassment allegations and accusations of misconduct involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Saraki emphasized that the probe is essential to uncover the truth and safeguard the integrity of the Senate as an institution.

In a detailed post on his verified Facebook page on Saturday afternoon, Saraki, who led the 8th Senate from 2015 to 2019, stressed the need for transparency and fairness in addressing the ongoing controversy. As a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Saraki pointed out that such an investigation would protect the Senate’s reputation, which has been negatively impacted by the dispute.

“I have followed the recent developments between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from a distance, and it saddens me, given the negative effect on the Senate’s image and public perception,” Saraki wrote. “Those who have been part of the National Assembly, particularly leaders, members, and staff, should always guard the values that make this institution one of the most important arms of government.”

Saraki urged both parties involved, along with their supporters, to consider the potential harm their actions and statements could cause to the Senate’s reputation. He called for the situation to be resolved based on the constitution, laws, Senate rules, and parliamentary practices, while ensuring the process is transparent and impartial. He emphasized that the goal should be to uncover the truth and protect the Senate from any wrongful perceptions.

Saraki suggested that the Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions conduct a thorough and open investigation into the matter. He also urged both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan to cooperate fully with the committee. He recalled a similar situation during the 8th Senate when a senator falsely accused him of importing an official car without paying customs duties. Saraki voluntarily appeared before the Ethics Committee to clear his name, and the investigation was conducted transparently.

“I believe the leadership of the 10th Senate should follow this example. The decision to submit to an open investigation was humbling but ultimately the best decision, and I am happy I took that route,” Saraki said.

He cautioned against allowing the Senate to be associated with allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of office, disregard for standing orders, or a lack of orderliness. Saraki emphasized that the investigation should seek to identify any wrongdoings and provide appropriate remedies.

“It is important to make it clear that I am not stating that Akpabio is guilty of anything, nor am I taking a stance on whether Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions and claims are justified,” Saraki clarified. “What I am advocating for is a transparent investigation to uncover the truth and protect the Senate’s integrity.”

Saraki concluded by reiterating the importance of the Senate as an institution, emphasizing that its sanctity must be preserved. He urged all democratic stakeholders to support efforts to strengthen and uphold the Senate’s integrity.
