JUST-IN: Bandits Kill Catholic Priest in Kaduna
In a tragic turn of events, bandits have killed Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, the priest of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The priest was abducted from his home on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, and was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Rev. Fr. Jacob Shanet, Chancellor of the Diocese of Kafanchan, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement released to the press. He revealed that Fr. Okechukwu, who was born on December 11, 1980, and ordained on February 11, 2021, was taken from his residence around 9:15 pm on Tuesday. His abduction and subsequent murder occurred just hours before the start of Ash Wednesday.
“We regret to inform you that Fr. Sylvester was cruelly killed by his abductors in the early hours of today,” Fr. Shanet said. “It is yet to be determined why he was killed.”
The death of Fr. Okechukwu has deeply shocked the Catholic community, as he was known for his selfless service in spreading messages of peace, love, and hope. His loss is being felt by his family, parishioners, and all who knew him.
Fr. Shanet urged the community to remain calm and avoid any actions that could escalate the situation. He called for prayers for the repose of Fr. Okechukwu’s soul and for strength during this difficult time.
“We invite all priests, religious, and the faithful to offer Holy Masses, Rosaries, and prayers for the eternal repose of Fr. Sylvester,” he added. “May we continue to hold one another in prayer and unity during this dark moment.”
The diocese has yet to announce the funeral arrangements, which will be communicated in due course.
