Rivers Assembly Extends Ultimatum To RSIEC Chair For Appearance In 72 Hours
Following the expiration of the 48-hour ultimatum given to the Chairman and commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to appear before the Rivers House of Assembly, the assembly has granted a 72-hour extension for their compliance.
This extension was made after a request by one of the lawmakers, Hon. Enemi George, during plenary on Friday in Port Harcourt. The assembly members voted in favor of the new deadline, setting it for Monday, March 10, 2024. The RSIEC Chairman, Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, and other officials of the commission are expected to appear before the assembly within this time frame.
The House also decided to suspend its planned recess to accommodate the extended ultimatum, following a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Dumle Maol.
In his remarks, Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule noted that the assembly has also taken legislative notice of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s failure to present the 2025 budget for consideration, despite a similar 48-hour ultimatum issued to him. Amaewhule stated that appropriate actions would be taken in due course concerning the governor’s delay.
