Ex-Minister Dubem Onyia Dies at 73

Chief Dubem Onyia, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and ex-member of the House of Representatives, has passed away at the age of 73.

A statement issued to LEADERSHIP by Engr. Emeka Onyia, on behalf of the family, confirmed the former minister’s death on Monday at an Abuja hospital following a brief illness.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hon. Chief Dubem Onyia, a distinguished statesman and former Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He died on March 10, 2025, after a short illness, surrounded by his family and loved ones,” the statement read.

“Chief Onyia devoted his life to God and public service, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape both at home and abroad. His time as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs was defined by his steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s national interest, which remains his lasting legacy. He was a dedicated husband, father, brother, a trailblazer, and a man of exceptional integrity, who mentored many and earned the respect of all who knew him.”

The statement further highlighted that Onyia’s contributions went beyond government service, impacting the lives of many through his wisdom, generosity, and efforts to improve society.

As a seasoned diplomat and politician, Onyia played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s foreign relations, including serving as the Chairman of the International Technical Commission for the National Boundary Commission, Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Joint Commission, and Chairman of the São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Boundary Commission.

His influence extended beyond politics, as he served on numerous corporate boards and government committees, receiving numerous national and international accolades for his work. He was also a trustee of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, contributing significantly to national development initiatives.
