NiMet Forecasts Heat Stress in 19 States
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of impending heat stress affecting 19 states in the North-Central zone, South-East, and coastal areas of Nigeria.
According to NiMet, the states most at risk include Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Other vulnerable states include Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.
The weather alert, released on Tuesday, indicates that rising temperatures and high humidity levels over the next three to four days will likely cause thermal discomfort in several regions. The agency highlighted the potential health risks, including fatigue, irritability, reduced focus and motor skills, and lower productivity.
In response, NiMet has advised residents in the affected areas to take precautions, including staying cool by using fans, air conditioning, or seeking shaded spaces. The agency also recommended wearing breathable clothing, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding exposure to the sun during peak hours (12 pm to 3 pm). Additionally, the public is advised to use sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to reduce the impact of the extreme heat.
