Court Sentences Man to One Year in Prison for N1.1 Million Employment Fraud in Maiduguri
On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Justice Muhammad Maina of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri convicted and sentenced Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe to one year in prison for a N1.1 million employment scam.
Omorogbe was charged by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with one count of criminal misappropriation amounting to N1,190,000.
According to the amended charge, Omorogbe, in May 2021, dishonestly misappropriated and used the sum of N1,190,000, belonging to Sarah Bulama, under the pretense of securing employment for her sister and another individual with the National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition (also known as the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons). This act was in violation of Section 308 and punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Law of Borno State (Cap. 102 vol. 3 of 1994).
Omorogbe pleaded guilty to the charge.
The prosecution, represented by S.O. Saka, requested the court to convict Omorogbe as charged, while the defense counsel, A.A. Yaro, appealed for leniency and mercy.
Justice Maina convicted Omorogbe and sentenced him to one year in prison, with the option to pay a fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira).
Omorogbe’s criminal actions began when he fraudulently collected N1.1 million under the false promise of securing jobs for his victims at the National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition. He neither provided the promised jobs nor refunded the money.
