EU Donates €46 Million to Support Social Protection in Nigeria
The European Union (EU) has donated €46 million to fund the Sustainable Social Protection System in Nigeria. The announcement was made during the launch of the programme at the United Nations (UN) House in Abuja on Friday.
The intervention programme, which was developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the EU, aims to address gaps in the national social protection register, making it a more effective planning tool.
Initially, the programme will be implemented in the states of Abia, Benue, Oyo, and Sokoto over a three-year period. Its goal is to improve the shock responsiveness of the social protection system at both the federal and state levels.
The programme will be carried out by UNICEF in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), both of which have committed to supporting social protection in Nigeria through policy advisory services, programme design, and delivering assistance to those in need. The Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and Labour and Employment will also be involved in the implementation of the initiative.
