Tensions Erupt in House of Representatives Over State of Emergency in Rivers, Fubara’s Suspension

A brief but intense drama unfolded in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as two female lawmakers clashed over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Hon. Marie Ebikake (PDP, Bayelsa) and Hon. Blessing Amadi (PDP, Rivers) engaged in a heated verbal exchange before the day’s plenary session, debating the constitutionality of the President’s declaration.

The confrontation escalated as other members banged their tables, voicing their discontent, while others seemed prepared for further confrontation over the matter.

Ahead of the plenary, groups of lawmakers were seen discussing the controversial issue, signaling growing tensions within the chamber.

The drama follows President Tinubu’s announcement late Tuesday, declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State. The declaration resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, and the State House of Assembly, with the suspension set to last for an initial six months.

In their place, Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-ette Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, as the state’s Sole Administrator.
