Police Confirm 6 Dead, 14 Vehicles Razed In Abuja Trailer Explosion
The FCT Police Command has confirmed that six people were killed in a tragic trailer accident that occurred on Wednesday evening in the Karu area of Abuja. Additionally, 14 vehicles were destroyed in the horrifying incident.
According to the Police Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the accident took place on March 19, 2025, around 6:58 pm, just before the Nyanya Bridge. A distress call was made to the Karu Division, reporting a Dangote trailer, which was heavily loaded with cement, losing control as it approached the Nyanya Bridge from AYA.
The trailer then crashed into stationary vehicles that were caught in traffic, triggering a fire that engulfed 14 vehicles. The explosion caused widespread panic, and bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety. Emergency responders, including the police and fire service personnel, rushed to the scene to battle the thick smoke and intense heat in an effort to rescue those trapped in the wreckage.
Unfortunately, six victims were found and rushed to the hospital, but they were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their bodies have been deposited at the Karu General Hospital morgue.
The police, in collaboration with other security agencies and emergency responders, managed to contain the fire and restore normal traffic flow in the area. SP Adeh expressed the FCT Police Command’s deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
The Police also issued a strong reminder for residents to adhere to traffic safety regulations, urging drivers to exercise caution, particularly in high-traffic areas, to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
Residents were also encouraged to report emergencies and suspicious activities to the FCT Command using the designated emergency contact numbers.
