Death Toll in Abuja Truck Explosion Rises to 10
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in the devastating truck explosion that occurred at Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway on Wednesday evening.
Mr. Mark Nyam, the Head of Forecasting Response and Mitigation at FEMD, reported that eight of the victims’ bodies were taken to Karu Hospital’s morgue, one was deposited at Asokoro District Hospital, and another at the National Hospital.
In addition to the fatalities, over 30 individuals sustained varying degrees of burns as a result of the explosion.
A statement from FEMD’s public affairs officer, Nkechi Isa, revealed that some victims had been referred to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre in Keffi, and Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja for further medical treatment.
The explosion also caused significant damage, destroying at least 10 vehicles.
After visiting the scene of the accident, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the acting director-general of FEMD, emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations. He cautioned against reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and poor vehicle maintenance, urging motorists to be more cautious on the roads.
Engr. Mohammed also reminded FCT residents to utilize the 112 emergency toll-free number for assistance during emergencies.
