Operatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have intercepted a significant illegal arms shipment and apprehended a suspect with 488 live AK-47 ammunition concealed inside palm oil jerrycans.
According to reports, the police, working in collaboration with officials from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), tracked and arrested 32-year-old Nuhu Aminu from Katsina State at the Nyanya bus terminal in Abuja on Monday, March 24, 2025.
FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that the suspect was caught with the live rounds of ammunition cleverly hidden in two 25-litre jerrycans filled with palm oil to avoid detection.
Upon questioning, Aminu admitted to being hired by Yakubu Kachalla from Funtua, Katsina State, who allegedly paid him ₦100,000 to pick up the illegal cargo from an undisclosed source in Nasarawa State and deliver it to Katsina.
The FCT Police Command emphasized that the arrest underscored their continuous commitment to dismantling criminal networks and preventing the illegal proliferation of arms that contribute to violent crimes across the country.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to locate his accomplices and further expose the extent of the arms-smuggling operation.
In a statement, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), FCT Command, DCP Isyaku Sharu, urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The Command reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety of citizens and intensifying efforts to combat crime in the region.
