Bill To Strip VPs, Govs Of Immunity Scales Second Reading In House Of Reps
A bill seeking to strip vice presidents, governors, and deputy governors of immunity has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. The bill, which was debated during plenary on Wednesday, aims to promote accountability in public office by removing the immunity currently granted to these political figures.
The bill is sponsored by Solomon Bob, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Rivers State. According to Bob, the proposed legislation intends to ensure that vice presidents, governors, and their deputies are held accountable for their actions while in office, without the shield of immunity that currently protects them from prosecution.
In addition to the immunity bill, several other proposals also passed second reading. These include a bill to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to separate the offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Attorney-General of states from the offices of the Minister of Justice at the federal level and Commissioners for Justice at the state level.
Other bills that successfully passed their second reading include a proposal to grant citizenship rights to spouses of Nigerian women, as well as bills aimed at creating new states such as Ijebu State, Ife-Ijesa State, Tiga State, Orlu State, and Etiti State.
This brings the total number of bills that have successfully completed their second reading to 81, following the approval of 39 constitutional amendment bills in the Senate on Tuesday.
