Ebonyi Assembly Adopts Referendum to Create 12 New LGAs

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has unanimously adopted a referendum to create an additional twelve (12) local government areas (LGAs), increasing the current number of LGAs from thirteen (13) to twenty-five (25).

The decision was made during a plenary session at the Assembly Complex in Abakaliki, where lawmakers argued that the creation of these new LGAs would bring government closer to the people, helping to alleviate their suffering by improving access to resources and governance.

The proposed new LGAs include:

  • Ikwo South and Ikwo North (from Ikwo LGA)
  • Ekumenyi (from Abakaliki LGA)
  • Ebyia (from Izzi LGA)
  • Ndiagbo (from Edda LGA)
  • Ishielu South (from Ishielu LGA)
  • Akaeze, Ukaba, and Effium (from Ivo, Onicha, and Ohaukwu LGAs respectively)
  • Izzikworo, Amohai, and Imoha (from Ezza-South, Ezza-North, and Afikpo LGAs respectively)

Once the referendum is passed into law, the number of LGAs in the state will rise to 25. This initiative is expected to address developmental and economic challenges faced by the people in those regions and will also help correct perceived imbalances in LGA distribution, considering factors like land mass and population density.

The motion for the adoption of the referendum was moved by the Chief Whip of the House and representative of Edda West, Hon. Nkemka Okoro-Onuma, and seconded by the member representing Ikwo North, Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu.

Following the motion, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa, put the matter to a vote, where it was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.
