EFCC Urges Enhanced Involvement of Lawyers, CSOs in Anti-Corruption Fight

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called for greater involvement of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and civil society organizations (CSOs) in the fight against corruption.

This call was made on Thursday, March 27, 2025, by the Acting Director of the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate, Bawa Usman Kaltungo, when he hosted leaders from the Barnawa and Kaduna branches of the NBA, along with representatives from the Corruption Trackers Initiative (CTI) North West Zone, who paid him a courtesy visit.

Kaltungo emphasized that the EFCC cannot succeed in its mission alone and needs the active participation of professional bodies like the NBA, CSOs, and the public. He encouraged these groups to intensify their commitment to the fight against corruption, urging them to collaborate for the betterment of Nigeria. “Our doors are always open to all stakeholders in the fight against corruption,” he stated.

He further called on all stakeholders to avoid unethical behaviors that could undermine their credibility. “We must always choose the path of honour because he who comes with equity must come with clean hands,” he said, stressing the importance of lawful conduct in the anti-corruption movement.

Leaders from the NBA and CTI praised their partnership with the EFCC, recognizing it as a crucial step in the country’s fight against corruption. Hamza Abideen, Executive Chairman of CTI North West Zone, expressed that the EFCC’s successes in fighting corruption inspired their organization’s voluntary movement to support the cause. He acknowledged the EFCC’s resilience in the face of challenges and commended its dedication.

NBA leaders, Bukola Ajao (Chairman, Barnawa Branch) and Godwin O. Ochai (Chairman, Kaduna Branch), reaffirmed their commitment to the anti-corruption fight. They emphasized the importance of synergy between the EFCC and the NBA, ensuring that those involved in corruption and financial crimes face justice.

The NBA representatives also congratulated Kaltungo on his appointment as the Acting Zonal Director and assured him of their cooperation in the continued fight against corruption.
