Senator Osita Ngwu Elected African Representative to IPU Bureau on Peace and Security

Senator Osita Ngwu, Nigeria’s Senate Minority Whip, has been elected as the African representative to the Bureau of the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security during the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The Nigerian lawmaker was nominated for the position by both Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

Representing Enugu West in the Senate, Senator Ngwu is currently participating in the ongoing high-level IPU meeting in Uzbekistan, alongside his colleagues from both Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives.

The IPU Committee on Peace and International Security is tasked with providing member parliaments with the political framework needed to address global security threats. One of its primary functions is to examine developments in peace and security and propose actionable responses to emerging global risks.

Initially focused on conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding, the committee’s focus has expanded to address contemporary issues such as terrorism, cybersecurity, nuclear proliferation, and governance challenges that fuel regional conflicts with far-reaching global consequences.

The Committee on Peace and International Security convenes twice a year, providing member parliaments with an opportunity to contribute to the agenda, participate in debates, and draft resolutions. Each year, the committee prepares a resolution for adoption by IPU members.
