Gov. Oborevwori and Okowa: Our Defection to APC is for the Good of Delta People

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has described his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his cabinet and other prominent figures as a “movement,” not just a political shift.

Speaking at a welcome rally on Monday, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the change in allegiance was not a mere defection but a well-thought-out shift aimed at benefiting the people of Delta State.

“What you’ve witnessed here today is more than just a defection—it’s a movement,” Oborevwori told the cheering crowd. “We consulted with key stakeholders at all levels, and Mr. President has shown us tremendous support. We cannot afford to work against him in 2027. The love and support we’ve received are genuine, and this shift is rooted in that organic connection.”

The governor’s switch to the APC, along with key political figures in the state, represents a significant reorganization of the political landscape in Delta State.

On April 23, 2025, Governor Oborevwori and his predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, publicly declared their decision to align with the ruling party, marking a pivotal moment in Delta’s politics.

Former Governor Okowa, who served from 2015 to 2023, also addressed the rally, where APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and several APC governors were present. Okowa reiterated that the move was made with the state’s best interests in mind.

“It’s a historic day for Delta State,” Okowa began. “When we announced our decision to switch paths on April 23, many questioned the rationale behind it. But sometimes, in the course of history, there comes a time when you must change direction for the greater good of the people. This decision was made with that spirit in mind.”

Okowa explained that the decision to join the APC was primarily driven by the need to strengthen the state’s ties with the federal government.

“It’s not about me or the current governor,” Okowa clarified. “It’s about ensuring that Delta connects with the federal government—the resources and goodwill that are concentrated in Abuja. Delta has contributed significantly to the national treasury, and it’s time we tap into that resource. During my tenure as governor, we did our best, but there were missed opportunities, and I believe it’s vital for the current governor to bridge the gap and access that power and support.”

He further emphasized that the move was a bold and patriotic one, made in the best interest of Delta State’s future. “When we sat down with stakeholders, we realized that this was the right course of action. It’s a courageous decision that will ultimately serve the people of Delta State.”
