Herder Kills Two Over Grazing Dispute in Nasarawa

A tragic altercation over grazing rights in Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has left two men dead, after a herder reportedly attacked them with a machete.

The victims, 21-year-old Arigun David and his 34-year-old friend, identified only as Michael, were killed on Sunday at the Agwan Doka area following a confrontation with the herder whose cattle allegedly destroyed David’s garden.

According to the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the incident began around 1:00pm when David challenged the herder after discovering his cattle had grazed on and eaten flowers he had planted.

“An argument broke out, and the herder macheted Mr. David, killing him on the spot,” Nansel said.

Michael, a resident of Phase 4, reportedly tried to intervene but was also attacked by the herder. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Mararaba Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Michael’s body has been deposited at the hospital for autopsy.

The herder fled the scene and remains at large.

In response, the state Commissioner of Police ordered increased security in the area and tasked the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to lead a full investigation and initiate a manhunt for the suspect.
