Police Detain Goats For Eating Trees In Kano
The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has begun impounding goats found to be eating and destroying newly planted trees under the state’s Urban Renewal Project.
Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change in the state, Dr. Dahir Hashim disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano on Friday.
Dr. Hashim confirmed that several goats had already been taken into custody at Zone I of the Nigeria Police Command for eating tree seedlings planted along major roads in the city.
“As part of our ongoing Urban Renewal Project, we’ve begun planting trees along major roads, starting with Lodge Road and Race Course,” Dr. Hashim said. “This initiative is aimed at reducing heat and air pollution, while also enhancing the beauty of Kano city.”
However, the project designed to green the city and combat climate change has faced an unusual challenge of free-roaming goats.
“We’ve received complaints that some residents are allowing their goats to roam freely, and these animals are damaging the young trees we’ve just planted,” he explained. “I want to make it clear – this will not be tolerated. We have already impounded several goats found eating the new trees.”
He said the goats were being held at the Zone I police facility as the ministry intensifies efforts to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Hashim urged residents to take ownership of the initiative and support government efforts to restore Kano’s environmental health.
“We’re calling on the public to work with us to protect these efforts,” he emphasised.
