Despite Setbacks, PDP Remains Resilient — Senate Caucus

The Senate Caucus of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims that the party is on the verge of collapse, asserting instead that the PDP remains strong and resilient despite its internal challenges.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), who led the caucus, firmly rejected insinuations that the party is disintegrating.

“The PDP remains very, very strong and will continue to grow stronger,” Senator Moro declared. “Contrary to widespread narratives, the PDP is not collapsing — it is evolving.”

The caucus acknowledged that the party has faced internal disputes but insisted that such issues are not unique to the PDP. Similar challenges, they noted, also exist within other major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The lawmakers urged PDP members across the country to stay committed and loyal, assuring them that the party’s leadership is taking proactive steps to rejuvenate the party and prepare it for future electoral contests.

“There is no democracy without a vibrant and functional opposition. The weakening or elimination of opposition parties poses a serious threat to the nation’s democratic health,” the caucus stated.

They warned against actions that could lead Nigeria toward a one-party state, arguing that democracy thrives on the balance and accountability provided by competitive political engagement.

Openness to Coalition Talks

On the possibility of political coalitions, the caucus expressed openness to future alliances but stressed that any such moves must be driven by institutions — not individuals.

“As the largest opposition party, the PDP has the structure and capacity to lead any genuine coalition aimed at deepening democracy and providing Nigerians with credible alternatives,” Senator Moro said. “The umbrella is wide enough to accommodate like-minded individuals and groups.”

Party Structures Still Intact

Reaffirming the PDP’s national spread and brand identity, the caucus emphasized that the party retains strong grassroots structures across all states and remains a viable alternative to the ruling party.

“From the throes of the current conflicts will emerge a renewed, vibrant PDP capable of offering Nigerians real leadership and hope,” Senator Moro asserted.

He concluded by calling on party members to recommit to the PDP’s founding principles and work collectively to preserve democratic ideals in Nigeria.
