Senate Calls for Military Base in Adamawa to Tackle Boko Haram Resurgence
The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Hong Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State as part of efforts to counter the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in the North-East.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Aminu Abbas (PDP-Adamawa Central) and co-sponsored by all Senators from the North-East zone, was adopted during a Senate plenary on Wednesday. The motion specifically highlighted the renewed insurgent activities in Hong and Gombi LGAs of Adamawa, which have displaced thousands of residents and severely impacted the local economy.
Senate’s Recommendations:
-
Establishment of a military base in Hong to enhance security.
-
Provision of relief materials by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for displaced communities.
Senator Abbas expressed concerns over the continued displacement of residents, as Boko Haram activities have crippled economic activities and left many unable to engage in farming or trade due to fear of attacks. He also noted that the insurgency has spread across the region, affecting neighboring Borno and Yobe States.
Concerns from Lawmakers:
-
Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, acknowledged the military’s dedication but warned of increasing threats from Boko Haram, which is regrouping and attacking military formations.
-
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, called for enhanced vigilance and stricter border security to prevent insurgents from infiltrating the country.
This resolution calls for stronger counterinsurgency measures as Boko Haram continues to disrupt communities and security in the region.
