Tinubu Awards GCON Honour to Indian Prime Minister Modi
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The honour was awarded during a bilateral meeting at the State House in Abuja on Sunday, symbolizing Nigeria’s recognition of Modi’s leadership and efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations.
President Tinubu, while presenting the award, underscored the deep-rooted relationship between Nigeria and India, emphasizing the need to further enhance and reclassify their partnership for mutual growth.
“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we are committed to deepening and broadening it for the mutual benefit of our two friendly nations,” Tinubu said.
Acknowledging Modi’s significant achievements, he remarked, “You exemplify a strong commitment to democratic values and governance. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society like India is an admirable feat that we respect immensely.
“In appreciation of your leadership and as a testament to our commitment to India as a partner, I hereby confer upon you the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger,” the President added.
In his response, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for the honour and extended condolences to Nigeria over the recent floods that devastated several regions, including Maiduguri in Borno State.
To support Nigeria’s recovery efforts, Modi announced a pledge of 20 tons of relief materials, highlighting India’s solidarity with the Nigerian people and the Tinubu-led administration.
“This gesture reflects the enduring friendship between our countries and India’s commitment to standing with Nigeria during challenging times,” Modi stated.
The event reinforced the strategic partnership between the two nations, marking another milestone in their long-standing diplomatic relations.
