Kano Sharia Court Acquits Jigawa Commissioner of Adultery Allegations

An Upper Sharia Court in Kofar Kudu, Kano State, has discharged and acquitted Auwal Danladi Sankara, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Special Duties, of adultery allegations brought against him by Nasiru Buba.

Buba had accused Sankara of engaging in an illicit affair with his wife, Tasleem Baba Nabegu. The commissioner was reportedly arrested by Kano State Hisbah Board operatives alongside Tasleem at one of his properties in Kano.

No Evidence of Wrongdoing

Delivering the verdict, presiding judge Ibrahim Sarki Yola highlighted that investigations conducted by the police revealed no evidence supporting the claim of adultery.

“Following the investigation by the police, the report shows there is no evidence to prove that there was any illicit affair between Auwal Danladi Sankara and Tasleem Baba Nabegu,” the judge stated.

The court also noted the absence of the complainant and his legal team during the proceedings. “Since the complainant and his lawyers are not present to challenge the submission by the police, I have no choice but to strike out the case,” Justice Sarki Yola ruled.

Reaction from Legal Representatives

Sankara’s lawyer, Barrister Sadam Suleiman, expressed satisfaction with the judgment, emphasizing that the commissioner’s reputation had been vindicated.

“We have always maintained that our client is innocent. The court has affirmed this by clearing his name based on the police investigation,” Suleiman said.

Similarly, Tasleem Baba Nabegu’s legal representative, Rabiu Shu’aibu, suggested the possibility of pursuing defamation charges against Buba. “We will discuss with our client to explore the possibility of filing a case against Nasiru Buba, as he has defamed her name,” Shu’aibu remarked.

Call for Caution

Justice Yola underscored the importance of conducting thorough investigations in cases involving sensitive allegations, particularly those concerning high-profile individuals. He advised law enforcement and regulatory bodies like the Hisbah Board to exercise diligence and caution to avoid unwarranted reputational damage.
