ISWAP Fighters Attack Military Camp in Borno, Claiming 20 Soldiers’ Lives

Islamic State fighters launched a devastating attack on a Nigerian Army camp in Kareto, Borno State, on Saturday, resulting in the death of approximately 20 soldiers and substantial material losses, according to military sources.

The attack reportedly involved heavy weaponry and included a suicide car bombing. The violent clash led to the destruction of a military vehicle, with some soldiers managing to escape the scene. The fighters burned down the camp, including 14 military vehicles, and seized four four-wheel-drive vehicles along with a cache of heavy machine guns before retreating to their stronghold.

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, expressed condolences to the military, describing the attack as a grim reminder of the brutality of Boko Haram and its splinter groups. In a statement issued by Usman Tar, the Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, the Governor commended the military’s sacrifices and called for intensified efforts to curb terrorist activities in the region.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges posed by insurgent groups in Nigeria’s northeast, which continue to test the resilience of the nation’s security forces.
