Gunmen Abduct Relatives of Renowned Journalist in Kogi State, Demand ₦50 Million Ransom

Gunmen have kidnapped three family members of Malam Ahmed Ajobe, a former editor of Daily Trust, in Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State. The victims, including Ajobe’s younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir, were abducted on Thursday while returning from a local market in Awo.

Details of the Incident

The victims were reportedly on their way home from the market, where they had purchased items for the seven-day prayer ceremony of Ajobe’s late mother, Malama Aishetu Tahir, who passed away on Sunday.

The kidnappers, who intercepted the victims along the Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi road, contacted the family on Friday, demanding a ransom of ₦50 million.

A family friend confirmed the demand, saying:

“The kidnappers reached out on Friday afternoon demanding ₦50 million as ransom. However, I cannot confirm the exact amount being negotiated. The victims remain in captivity.”

Police Efforts to Secure Release

Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Aya, confirmed the incident, adding that the Divisional Police Officer in the area has mobilized officers for a rescue mission.

Commissioner of Police Bethrand Onuoha has also deployed a tactical team to the area to support ongoing efforts. Aya assured that all measures are being taken to ensure the safe release of the victims and to apprehend the perpetrators.

This incident highlights the persistent insecurity in Kogi State and the broader Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi axis, known for its deteriorating road infrastructure and frequent reports of criminal activity.
