Ajaka Applauds EFCC for Arrest and Prosecution of Yahaya Bello
Alhaji Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, the former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 Kogi State election, has praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its decisive action in arresting and prosecuting former Governor Yahaya Bello over allegations of fraud and corruption during his tenure from January 2016 to January 2024.
Ajaka, speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, described the EFCC’s move as a significant step toward ensuring accountability and justice, which the people of Kogi State have long sought. He emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to uncover solid, irrefutable evidence that would not only sustain the prosecution but also strengthen the case.
Ajaka further suggested that the EFCC broaden its investigation by questioning local government chairmen who served under Bello’s administration, as they reportedly facilitated access to local government funds. He also called for an inquiry into the actions of the Kogi State House of Assembly, particularly its leadership, for allegedly approving loans that may have been misappropriated during Bello’s time in office.
Ajaka added that the EFCC should investigate Bello’s financial status prior to assuming office in 2016, suggesting that obtaining his asset declaration records from the Code of Conduct Bureau could provide insight into any discrepancies and help clarify how he accumulated significant wealth during his tenure.
While supporting the EFCC’s efforts, Ajaka cautioned the commission against trivializing the case, noting that the earlier controversy—where Bello was declared wanted but later appeared at the EFCC headquarters without being arrested—had raised public doubts. He stressed that the EFCC must reassure the people of Kogi State by conducting a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.
Ajaka also addressed rumors circulating from Bello’s camp, which suggested that a deal had been made for his release prior to his arrest. He urged the EFCC to publicly address these claims to maintain the credibility of the investigation and restore public confidence.
The former governorship candidate concluded by emphasizing the expectations of the Kogi people: the recovery of the hundreds of billions of naira allegedly stolen during Bello’s administration. He called for the recovered funds to be returned to the state’s coffers and used for critical developmental projects that would improve the lives of Kogi citizens.
