Finnish Court Sets May 2025 Deadline for Simon Ekpa’s Terrorism Trial
Pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa, who was arrested in Finland for suspected terrorism-related activities, will face charges in May 2025, according to Finnish authorities. A Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, Mikko Laaksonen, confirmed to The PUNCH that the district court had set a deadline for prosecutors to present potential charges against Ekpa.
Ekpa, the self-proclaimed “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was arrested along with four others on suspicion of terrorism, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. Finnish police allege that Ekpa used social media platforms to promote violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, targeting both civilians and authorities. He was remanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court on charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.
The Finnish authorities’ investigation into the case is still ongoing, and no further details have been disclosed at this time. Ekpa’s trial will proceed as planned in May 2025, with prosecutors expected to present evidence related to the charges.
