Governor Buni Donates ₦20 Million to Bayan Tasha Fire Victims
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed his sympathy and sorrow over the devastating fire that ravaged the Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, which resulted in the destruction of about 50 shops. The fire broke out early on Tuesday at around 2:00 am, shortly after electricity was restored, affecting shop owners who had already closed for the day.
Governor Buni described the incident as tragic and unfortunate, particularly given the current economic hardships. In a statement released by his Director General of Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, Buni directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assess the damages caused by the fire and evaluate the losses sustained by the affected traders.
In response to the incident, the governor’s deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, visited the scene and announced a ₦20 million donation to provide immediate assistance to the victims. This donation is aimed at helping meet the urgent needs of those affected while awaiting a comprehensive report on the damages.
Although no lives were lost in the fire, 46 shops were destroyed, affecting over 200 people. Governor Buni also urged residents to take precautionary measures against fire outbreaks, particularly as the harmattan season approaches.
