Akwa Ibom Government Cracks Down on Kiosk Racketeers
The Akwa Ibom State Government has arrested several vendors involved in fraudulent activities during the kiosks validation exercise. The move follows Governor Umo Eno’s dissatisfaction with reports of illegal resale of kiosks and other violations, prompting him to challenge the organizing ministry to identify and take action against those responsible.
Charles Udoh, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, revealed on Wednesday that some vendors had been apprehended for offenses including multiple online registrations, reselling kiosks at inflated prices, data inconsistencies during verification, and name mismatches.
“These kiosks confiscated from the culprits will be reassigned to deserving vendors who were unfairly deprived of this government initiative,” Udoh stated.
The crackdown coincided with the opening ceremony of the Christmas Unplugged season 2.0 at Unity Park in Uyo. Governor Umo Eno, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Enobong Uwah, underscored the importance of peaceful coexistence and economic opportunities during the festive season. “This is a celebration; we don’t want any form of violence. Let us enjoy this season of love and goodwill together in peace,” Uwah stated, adding that security measures had been put in place to ensure a safe celebration.
Governor Eno also encouraged vendors and artists participating in the event to use the platform as an opportunity to expand their businesses. He emphasized that the experience and connections gained were just as valuable as any profits.
Organized by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Christmas Unplugged season 2.0 will run for 30 days, featuring music, cultural displays, and exhibitions. The event offers a chance for the state’s 31 Local Government Areas to showcase their rich cultural heritage.
