NSIB Investigates Mid-Air Engine Failure on Abuja-Accra Flight

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into a serious incident involving an Abuja-Accra flight that encountered technical difficulties mid-flight.

On December 6, 2024, the aircraft, identified by the registration number 5NKAL, was en route from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (DNAA) in Abuja to Kotoka International Airport (DGAA) in Accra when it experienced a malfunction. Preliminary reports from Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, revealed that the flight encountered an issue with engine number 2.

The aircraft, carrying four individuals — three crew members and one passenger — was climbing through flight level 240, heading towards flight level 280, when the crew reported a problem with engine number 2. At that time, the plane was approximately 25 nautical miles southwest of VOR station VONUK, around 17:54 UTC. The crew immediately requested to divert back to Abuja, and the request was granted. The aircraft was cleared to descend to flight level 190.

While descending, the aircraft lost engine number 2 at flight level 230. The crew made the decision to return to Abuja. As the plane neared Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, at around 5,000 feet, the crew declared a Mayday, reporting the failure of engine number 1. Despite the challenges, the crew safely landed the aircraft at 18:16 UTC, and all those on board were unharmed.

NSIB has launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the engine failures and to prevent similar incidents in the future. The investigation team is currently gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and reviewing the aircraft’s maintenance and flight data records. The Bureau is committed to enhancing aviation safety and will provide further updates as more information emerges.
