US to Engage with All Syrian Groups Following Assad’s Fall — Biden

President Joe Biden stated on Sunday that the United States would engage with “all Syrian groups” to help guide the political transition in Syria following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.

Biden emphasized that the U.S. would support a process led by the United Nations aimed at moving Syria away from Assad’s regime toward a more independent, sovereign nation with a new constitution. He also highlighted the significance of Assad’s departure as an opportunity for justice for the long-suffering Syrian people.

When asked about Assad’s fate, who reportedly fled to Moscow, Biden said that the deposed leader should be held accountable for his actions during his rule, which was marked by widespread human rights violations.

Biden described Assad’s fall as a “historic opportunity” for Syria, marking a moment of potential change after more than five decades of Assad family rule. The remarks came after the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) led a lightning offensive, capturing Damascus and forcing Assad to flee. This shift triggered celebrations across the country, with rebels and citizens ransacking Assad’s luxurious residence.
