US Election, New National Anthem, National Grid Top Nigeria’s Google Searches for 2024

The Google 2024 Year in Search report for Nigeria, released on Tuesday, highlighted the key topics that captured Nigerians’ attention throughout the year. The most searched topics included the United States 2024 election, the new national anthem, and the national grid.

The report underscored a sustained interest in the political and economic climate of the country, with searches about the US election topping the list, followed by inquiries into Nigeria’s new national anthem and the national grid.

In addition to politics, the entertainment industry also had a strong presence in the search trends. Popular personalities such as Bobrisky topped the list of trending people, while musicians like Shallipopi and Khaid saw a surge in popularity. The top trending song was “I Don’t Care” by Boy Spyce, followed by “Ozeba” and “Commas” by Ayra Starr. Nigerians also searched for the lyrics of several songs, with tracks like “Ogechi,” “Ozeba,” and “Omemma” by Chandler leading the charge.

The entertainment trend extended to movies, with films like A Tribe Called Judah, Treasure in the Sky, and Damsel topping the charts. The TV series “Supacell,” “My Demon,” and “Queen of Tears” also captured the interest of Nigerian viewers.

On a culinary note, Nigerians explored various recipes, with the “Pornstar Martini recipe” leading searches in the food category.

In addition to entertainment and politics, Nigerians were curious about everyday topics, as questions like “How much is the dollar to naira today?” and “How to get perfectly defined curls for African hair?” made the top queries list. Some also searched for the meaning of words such as “demure,” “steeze,” and “pet peeves.”

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Google West Africa, remarked that the 2024 Year in Search offers a unique perspective on the questions, interests, and conversations that shaped Nigerian society during the year. The insights reflect how search continues to be an important tool for Nigerians to navigate their world and stay informed.
