Nasarawa Workers to Receive N70,500 New Minimum Wage Starting in December
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has confirmed that his administration will pay a new minimum wage of N70,500 to workers starting from December, as part of efforts to align with the approved wage structure.
This announcement comes despite an ongoing strike by state workers, which has led to the closure of all government offices across the state. The governor made the promise during the inauguration of the newly remodeled office of Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe in Lafia.
Governor Sule emphasized that his administration is committed to improving the living standards of the state’s residents, particularly its workers. He added that this commitment is reflected in the priority given to the welfare of civil servants at both the state and local government levels.
He called on the striking workers to reconsider their decision and return to their duties, reassuring them that the N70,500 minimum wage would take effect this month. The governor also pledged that his administration would continue to pay salaries on time.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the state’s civil servants had embarked on an indefinite strike, protesting the state government’s failure to implement the N70,000 national minimum wage signed into law by the federal government. Workers, led by labor union leaders, shut down all ministries, departments, and agencies in the state to demand the wage increase.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa, Comrade Ismaila Okoh, accused the government of failing to formally commit to the new wage despite multiple rounds of negotiations. “All offices will remain closed until the state government reconsiders its position and begins implementing the N70,000 minimum wage,” Okoh had declared.
