FBI Director Christopher Wray Announces Resignation

Christopher Wray, the Director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has announced his resignation, which will take effect at the conclusion of President Joe Biden’s administration. His decision comes ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump in January 2025, marking the end of a seven-year tenure that was defined by significant challenges and a focus on maintaining the FBI’s independence.

Wray made the announcement during an address to FBI employees at the agency’s headquarters on Wednesday night. A video excerpt of his remarks was shared on the FBI’s official X account, with the full speech published on the Bureau’s website.

“Since the moment I started this job, my focus has been on what’s best for our institution—for the Bureau and the American people we serve,” Wray said, his voice reflecting both conviction and emotion. “This decision, while not easy, is about safeguarding the Bureau’s future.”

During his leadership, Wray oversaw the FBI through escalating threats, such as cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and the devastating opioid epidemic. He highlighted the FBI’s significant achievements, including dismantling violent crime networks, preventing terrorist attacks, and thwarting a mass casualty event just weeks ago.

“These challenges are formidable and growing,” Wray said, noting the increasing threats from adversaries like China and the misuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence by criminals.

Despite these evolving challenges, Wray expressed confidence in the FBI’s ability to adapt, emphasizing the resilience of the agency’s 38,000 employees, whom he described as the “bedrock” of the Bureau’s success.

“Our strength lies in each other,” he remarked. “We’re not on any one side. We’re on the American people’s side—the Constitution’s side.”

In his speech, Wray underscored the FBI’s unwavering commitment to independence and integrity, even in the face of external pressures. He emphasized that the Bureau’s mission is rooted in doing “the right thing, the right way—every time,” a principle he said would remain the foundation of the institution.

As the agency prepares for leadership change, Wray expressed pride in the FBI’s steadfast dedication to protecting the nation and urged his colleagues to remain vigilant in their mission. He described their work as both challenging and noble.

“Our work is never done,” he concluded. “But it’s noble work. And together, you will continue to uphold it.”
