Mexican Mayor and Three Others Killed in Attack

A tragic incident occurred in Mexico’s central San Luis Potosi state on Sunday, as Jesus Eduardo Franco, the Mayor of Tancanhuitz and a member of the ruling Morena Party, was shot dead alongside three other individuals, local authorities have confirmed.

The victims were found lifeless inside a vehicle, according to a statement from the state prosecutor’s office.

Condolences and Calls for Justice

Reacting to the killing, Morena Party President Rita Rodriguez expressed her condolences and demanded justice via a statement on X (formerly Twitter):

“We deeply regret the death of our colleague Eduardo Franco, municipal president of Tancanhuitz. We ask authorities to reach the ultimate consequences and find those responsible.”

Wave of Violence Targeting Officials

This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence targeting local officials in Mexico, often linked to organized crime.

  • Last month, Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in southern Guerrero state, was decapitated less than a week after taking office, with his severed head placed on a pickup truck in a chilling display of violence.

Mexico’s Ongoing Security Crisis

Since the Mexican government began deploying the army to combat drug cartels in 2006, the country has faced a surge in violence. Official statistics reveal that over 450,000 people have been murdered and thousands more have gone missing during this period.

The killings of public officials, including mayors and local leaders, highlight the severe challenges posed by organized crime and underscore the need for urgent action to curb the escalating violence.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the killings, with calls from political and public figures for decisive action to ensure justice and protect officials from such targeted attacks.
