Gunmen Kill UNIZIK Lecturer
A senior lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Dr. Osita Chinedu, has been tragically killed by gunmen in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident occurred around 8:00 PM on Monday near the High Tension area in Awka. Eyewitnesses reported that Dr. Chinedu, driving his Toyota Corolla, was ambushed by assailants in another vehicle of the same make and model.
Upon blocking his car, the attackers forced Dr. Chinedu to exit his vehicle. According to an eyewitness:
“As he came out to confront them, one of the assailants pulled a gun and shot him twice in the head. Blood started gushing out as he collapsed.”
The attackers reportedly searched his car, ran it over his body, and fled the scene with both vehicles—Dr. Chinedu’s Toyota Corolla and their own.
Bystanders, who identified the victim, contacted his family. While attempts were being made to move his remains, police officers from the Central Police Station (CPS) in Awka arrived at the scene, leading to a brief disagreement over custody of the body.
The murder has thrown the UNIZIK community into mourning. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Louise Njelita, confirmed receiving news of the lecturer’s death but noted that details were still emerging.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement:
