A tragic stampede at a children’s carnival in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has resulted in the deaths of an unconfirmed number of children, with reports indicating that around 30 children may have lost their lives. Many others have been injured in the incident.
The stampede occurred during a private children’s funfair at Basorun Islamic High School on Wednesday. The state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the incident and stated that the government quickly mobilized a response team to assist the victims.
Oyelade noted that the victims have been transported to hospitals across Ibadan for medical treatment. He commended the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, for activating all available response teams. However, he clarified that the state government had no involvement in the planning or logistics of the private event and emphasized the importance of proper coordination for such large-scale events, especially those involving children and the elderly.
The commissioner confirmed that the government is awaiting a detailed report from the Commissioner of Police to confirm the exact number of victims. Parents looking for their children are advised to check the following hospitals in Ibadan for the injured: Patnas Hospital, Western Hospital, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital, and the University College Hospital.
The state government has extended its deepest condolences to the affected families and is working to provide necessary support during this tragic time.
