Reps Contribute N704m to Support Vulnerable Nigerians Amid Economic Hardship
The House of Representatives has raised ₦704.91 million to support vulnerable Nigerians grappling with the economic challenges following the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abba, announced during Thursday’s plenary that the funds would be formally presented to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024.
Commitment to Alleviating Hardship
Abba praised members of the House for their contributions, stating,
“If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed ₦704,907,578.82.”
He further emphasized the importance of the gesture:
“The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians.”
Background of the Initiative
The decision to donate 50% of their salaries for six months was reached on July 18, 2024, following the adoption of a motion moved during a plenary session.
The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, had proposed the motion, urging members to sacrifice part of their earnings to support Nigerians during this challenging period. He remarked,
“This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50% for a period of six months.”
Kalu disclosed that the monthly salary of a member of the House is ₦600,000, with each member contributing ₦300,000 per month over the period.
Presentation to the President
Speaker Abba will lead a delegation of the House leadership to present the funds to President Tinubu, with assurances that the money will be exclusively used for the benefit of vulnerable Nigerians who are most in need.
This initiative underscores the lawmakers’ commitment to addressing the immediate welfare needs of citizens amid ongoing economic reforms.
