NAF to Take Over Akwa Ibom Airstrip for Aerial Surveillance and National Security
The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has announced plans to establish an operational base at the Akwa Ibom Airstrip in the coastal area of Eket Local Government Area. This move is part of NAF’s efforts to combat insecurity, including insurgency, oil theft, and maritime crimes, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea region.
Strategic Importance of the Airbase
- Forward Operating Base: The airstrip will serve as a Forward Operating Base to extend air power and enhance national security, focusing on protecting territorial integrity, critical oil assets, and supporting the promotion of a thriving blue economy.
- Aerial Surveillance: The base will enable enhanced surveillance capabilities in the region, addressing various security threats and bolstering maritime operations.
NAF’s Request for State Cooperation
During a courtesy call on Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno at the Government House in Uyo, Air Commodore A. H. Idris, leading the NAF delegation, sought the governor’s support for the establishment of the operational base. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the state government and NAF to ensure successful implementation.
Governor Eno’s Response
Governor Eno expressed full support for the initiative, assuring the NAF of his administration’s readiness to facilitate the establishment of the base. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring peace and security, highlighting that the Air Force’s presence would complement the existing security architecture, which already includes the Army and Navy.
Acknowledgement of NAF’s Role
Governor Eno also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, for selecting Akwa Ibom as the location for the new base. The state has previously had only a limited presence of the NAF, making this development an important step in strengthening its security framework.
This move by the NAF is seen as a strategic response to the growing security challenges in the region and a significant enhancement to the state’s overall security capabilities.
