Anambra Stampede: Police Confirm Death Toll at 22

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Nnaghe Itam, has confirmed that 22 people lost their lives during a stampede at a Christmas rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area. The event was organized by a philanthropist, Chief Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as ObiJackson, at his Okija residence on Saturday.

Police Response

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the Commissioner visited the injured victims in the hospital and expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

“The State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety of Ndi Anambra, investigating the tragic incident thoroughly, and preventing future occurrences,” Ikenga assured.

Obijackson Foundation’s Statement

The Obijackson Foundation, which organized the rice-sharing event, expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, pledging to investigate the incident and enhance safety measures for future events.

“The event, a cherished tradition aimed at supporting the less privileged during the Yuletide season, turned somber when an unfortunate stampede claimed lives and left several families grieving,” the Foundation said in a statement.

Commitment to Humanitarian Efforts

The Foundation emphasized that the tragedy would not deter it from its mission of serving the vulnerable.

“This setback will not stop us from uplifting those in need. We pledge to learn from this experience and implement stricter safety protocols,” the statement added.

The Foundation extended its sympathies to Governor Charles Soludo, the families of the deceased, and the entire Okija community.

“This tragedy breaks our hearts. We are committed to supporting those affected and ensuring safer, more impactful initiatives in the future,” it concluded.
