Elon Musk’s X Raises Premium+ Subscription Fees by 51% in Nigeria
Elon Musk’s microblogging platform, X (formerly Twitter), has announced a significant global price hike for its Premium+ subscription plan. Nigerian users are among those most affected, facing a 51% increase.
The Premium+ subscription, which offers features such as ad-free browsing, will now cost N34,000 per month, up from N22,550. This adjustment positions Nigeria as one of the countries experiencing the steepest increase.
Global Comparison of Premium+ Price Adjustments
- United States: Increased from $22 to $16 (37.5% hike).
- European Union: Increased from €16 to €21 (31% hike).
- Canada: Increased from $20 to $29 (45% hike).
Implementation Timeline
X stated that the new pricing took effect for new subscribers on December 21, 2024. Existing subscribers will continue paying the old rates until their billing cycle starts after January 20, 2025.
Reasons for the Price Increase
The company attributed the price adjustment to enhanced features and the introduction of a more equitable revenue model for creators.
“Your Premium+ subscription fee contributes to this new, more equitable system where creator earnings are tied to the overall value they bring to X, not impressions of ads,” the company said.
Premium Subscription Plan Remains Unchanged
The price hike affects only the Premium+ plan. The lower-tier Premium subscription plan remains steady at N3,650 per month or N38,500 annually in Nigeria.
User Feedback
The significant hike has sparked reactions online, particularly among Nigerian users, who have expressed concerns about affordability amidst prevailing economic challenges. X has urged users with questions to contact X Premium for further clarification.
This development reflects the platform’s evolving monetization strategy under Musk’s leadership, emphasizing features like ad-free browsing and creator support.
