The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has reported the rescue of 105 people and the tragic loss of four lives due to multiple building collapses across the Territory in 2024.
The acting director-general of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, shared the details during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday. He revealed that the building collapses occurred in various locations, including Prince and Princess Estate, Guzape District, Garki 2, Kubwa, and Sabon Lugbe near the Airport Road.
Mohammed explained that in addition to the building collapses, the FEMD responded to various other emergencies in 2024, including fire outbreaks, flooding, and earth tremors. The department also distributed relief supplies to affected residents.
FEMD’s Key Achievements in 2024:
- Lives Rescued and Lost:
- A total of 105 people were rescued from building collapses.
- Unfortunately, 4 lives were lost in the collapse incidents.
- 75 lives were saved during flood-related disasters, with one fatality reported at Angwan Hakimi, Orozo.
- Other Emergencies:
- 1,230 individuals were rescued during fire incidents without casualties.
- A suicide attempt at a telecommunications mast on Katampe Hill was successfully averted by FEMD and police intervention.
- The department also responded to an earth tremor affecting Mpape, Katampe, and parts of Maitama Extension, which caused distress to over 2,000 residents.
- Traffic Accidents:
- 89 individuals were rescued from road traffic accidents, but 3 fatalities were recorded.
- Flood Mitigation Efforts:
- FEMD addressed flood risks by barricading the Galadimawa interchange slip road, which was reopened in November 2024.
Technological Advancements and Future Plans: Engr. Mohammed highlighted the department’s plan to leverage technology in disaster management, including the use of low Earth orbit satellites for real-time imagery and risk assessments. This will help enhance response efficiency and improve monitoring across the FCT.
Looking ahead to 2025, FEMD will focus on risk assessments in high-risk areas and establish secure communication channels for better information sharing. The department also plans to strengthen disaster management systems and improve data storage solutions for effective response to emergencies.
