Plateau Has Capacity to Drive Livestock Development in Nigeria — Mutfwang
Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to establishing a strong foundation for livestock development in Nigeria.
Speaking during a courtesy visit and stakeholders’ engagement forum hosted at the New Government House in Rayfield, Jos, Governor Mutfwang welcomed the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, led by Prof. Attahiru Jega.
The Governor praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating practical measures to revitalize the livestock sector, highlighting its potential to address the ongoing farmer-herder clashes, enhance national security, and generate significant economic revenue.
“I must commend Mr. President for taking this bold step. If anyone is more positioned to make this initiative a reality, it is us in Northern Nigeria,” Governor Mutfwang said.
“This reform offers opportunities to de-escalate conflicts, create employment, boost our GDP, and foster technological advancements,” he added.
Strengths of Plateau State
Governor Mutfwang emphasized Plateau State’s unique advantages, including its skilled workforce, expertise, and favorable climate, positioning the state as a leader in livestock reform efforts. He announced plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development by January 2025 to drive these initiatives.
“We will tailor this national initiative to suit our local needs, ensuring inclusivity and progress. A secure environment isn’t defined by the presence of soldiers but by their absence. Our priority must be policies that de-escalate conflicts and create a thriving, sustainable livestock ecosystem,” the Governor remarked.
Support from the Presidential Committee
Prof. Attahiru Jega, Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, lauded Governor Mutfwang for his proactive approach and enthusiasm. He pledged the committee’s full support in making Plateau State a model for livestock development in Nigeria.
“We have evaluated Plateau State and believe it has the potential to lead Nigeria’s livestock development,” said Prof. Jega. “The President established this committee in July 2024 to harness opportunities in the livestock sector. Once fully developed, this sector will create jobs, boost productivity, and significantly enhance economic growth.”
Committee’s Objectives and Collaboration
Prof. Jega explained that the committee is engaging stakeholders nationwide to promote the livestock initiative and explore its vast economic and social benefits.
Similarly, Plateau State’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Hon. Ishaku Bugama, affirmed the state’s readiness to spearhead livestock reforms, stating that Plateau is equipped to deliver impactful results that will benefit both the region and the nation.
