190 Flights Cancelled in 2 Months — NCAA
The acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Chris Najomo, revealed that 190 flights were cancelled over a span of two months.
Najomo made this statement during the Airlines-NCAA engagement on flight disruptions in the country, held on Friday. He expressed concern about the rising number of flight cancellations, sharing statistics for September and October 2024. According to the NCAA boss, out of 5,291 flights in September 2024, 2,434 were delayed and 79 were cancelled. Similarly, in October 2024, 5,513 flights were operated, with 2,791 delays and 111 cancellations.
“Delays and cancellations are sometimes inevitable, but poor management of these disruptions is not. It’s the responsibility of airlines to ensure that every disruption, whether due to operational, technical, or weather-related challenges, is handled with professionalism and regard for passengers’ rights,” Najomo emphasized. He also highlighted the harmattan season as a contributing factor to weather-related disruptions affecting flight operations.
The NCAA Director-General reminded all airlines of the NCAA Regulations on Passenger Rights during disruptions, stating that these regulations are mandatory, not optional. He referred to the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023, which outlines the obligations of airlines in managing such disruptions.
